Early Christmas gift to Employers who use independent contractors! The Department of Labor has a brand new web page it just rolled out to help guide workers who may be misclassified as independent contractors. In a statement the DOL called misclassification a “huge problem” for workers and cited a taxi driver who equated it to “modern-day slavery.”
The landing page starts off with “What is misclassification?” After that, it states how workers, businesses and governments can be hurt in this scenario. “The Department of Labor supports the use of legitimate independent contractors – who play an important role in our economy,” the web page reads, “but when employers deliberately misclassify employees as independent contractors in an attempt to cut costs, everyone loses.”
